Are we predisposed to pick men like our fathers? It is true that the first man we ever meet is our father. Does this first encounter set a model for us to template our standards? Can we ever break the cycle? Especially when we don’t get along with them?

We are taught as western women, to go out and find the men that suits us best and make a life. Shouldn’t we be enough for ourselves? It is true that our existence would not be without procreation. If procreation is what propels us forward, why is it important to find the “perfect mate to do it with? Why not pick a mate that has favorable physical attributes, or resources to support a family, or qualities that are conducive of survival. Why pick a mate that makes you happy, or makes you laugh, or even listens to same music as you do? In the end these qualities actually have no bearing on the creation of an offspring or their survival for that matter.

Maybe choosing men like our fathers is the easiest way for us to negotiate ourselves in this world of possible mates. We try to find what is familiar. It has been suggested that before even we search for what is familiar, we search for ourselves in the crowd. Because nothing is more familiar than ourselves. And nothing is more safe.
